Belt Tensioners

What does a belt tensioner do?

A belt tensioner maintains the correct amount of tension on the belt throughout its duty cycle, while reducing undue stress from the alternator and water pump.

What are the two types of belt tensioners?

There are two basic tensioner pulley types. The most common is a manual-adjusting tensioner that requires you to manually adjust the tension as the belts wear.  The second type is self-adjusting, which is spring-loaded and provides its own tension.
