Clutch Discs and Friction Plates

What is a clutch disc or friction plate?

Clutch discs are also be described as friction plates. A friction clutch plate is used in manual transmission vehicles to allow the transmission input shaft and engine to run at the same speed when rotating. When the clutch is engaged, the friction plate is sandwiched between the engine flywheel and a steel pressure plate that is bolted to the flywheel. The friction between the discs of the two bodies allow the transmission of torque from the engine to the driveline.

What are friction plate discs made of?

Friction plates, also known as clutch discs, consist of a metal plate bonded with a friction material.
