TCI

TCI Torque Converters, Transmissions, Shifters, Flexplates, Flywheels and More

When TCI first opened its doors in 1968, it was a modest operation dedicated to delivering high-performance transmission-related parts to a small group of devout drag racing enthusiasts. From those humble beginnings in Memphis, TN, TCI® has grown to be one of the largest and most technologically advanced manufacturers of high-performance aftermarket drivetrain products in the world. Currently located in two large facilities in Ashland, MS, some 45 miles from parent company the COMP Performance Group, TCI continues to set trends and expand its line of quality transmission torque converter and accessory parts.  The current TCI product line-up includes Transmissions, Transmission Packages, Torque Converters, Transmission Accessories, Transmission Internals, Transmission Mounts, Transmission Fluids, Shifters, Valve Bodies, Electronics, Flexplates, Flywheels and Transmission Coolers.

The original directive, to deliver high performance racing torque converters, is still a core business for TCI. However, the need for high performance street products, including high-quality automatic transmissions, has increased dramatically, led by an eager contingent of enthusiasts who enjoy improving the performance of their street driven vehicles. Because of these changing trends, TCI business has changed considerably with 80 percent of their products targeted to street enthusiasts and 20 percent to hard-core drag and circle track racers.

Choosing the perfect drivetrain products for your application isn’t a simple process. Every part of your drivetrain is a critical piece of a complex, interlocking system that needs to match perfectly in order for your application to generate peak performance. Flywheels and Flexplates

What is a flywheel?

In a motorized vehicle, the flywheel is the interface between the clutch mechanism and the transmission. It is a large gear-looking metal disc, with teeth around its outer edge. The purpose of the teeth is to allow the starter to engage and turn the engine over.

Which is better steel or aluminum flywheel?

For street use, which requires stop and go driving, a steel flywheel is the best choice. The heavier weight of steel stores more energy than aluminum, which helps with momentum as you start rolling. For performance driving and racing, the type of driving you do sill dictate which flywheel material is recommended. For example, if you drag race, then a steel flywheel is better, as it provides a stronger launch off the line. If you do road course racing or run cones solo at your local parking lot, an aluminum flywheel is better, as you will be able to accelerate out of corners quicker.
